DAS Delivers Fully Automated Assembly Solution for Leading Fire Detection Manufacturer

Design & Automation Solutions (DAS) has successfully designed and delivered a fully automated assembly solution for a leading UK manufacturer of fire detection and alarm devices.

The bespoke system, developed in collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric and Scorpion Vision, significantly improves throughput, quality control, and operational efficiency in the assembly of components for a Manual Call Point product.

Raising Throughput and Accuracy with Smart Automation

The new solution replaces manual assembly with a fully automated production cell designed to handle 300 parts per hour per function, exceeding previous production targets while ensuring repeatable, high-quality results.

The system features two sub-assembly stations linked by a Mitsubishi Electric RV-4 6-axis robot, which manages all loading, unloading, and pick-and-place tasks. Five vibratory bowl feeders deliver components to the assembly stations, while two Scorpion Vision camera systems feature to provide real-time orientation data – solving a key challenge where conventional orientation methods were not suitable.

Pneumatically actuated pick-and-place technology handles straightforward insertions, and a Demag electric screwdriver applies precise torque settings for screw insertions. Control is managed by a Mitsubishi Electric Q Series PLC, linked to a GOT 2000 HMI for intuitive operator interaction, with iQ-F PLC remote I/O and a CC-Link IE field network ensuring fast and reliable communication.
